The Talon 5-Sided Aluminum Shotgun Forend is constructed of T6 aluminum with a hard coat type III anodized finish, providing a tough yet extremely lightweight forend weighing only 6.8 ounces. The Talon features ATI’s NEW 2” Dovetail Rail System for even greater versatility. The rails are located at 45° increments around forend and rails can be positioned to exact location along length of forend. The rail fasteners are coated with Loctite® to provide the most secure fit. The Talon is the only forend with a built-in heat shield that keeps your hand from sliding into a hot gun barrel.
Every forend package includes an adapter kit that allows installation to be installed on Mossberg 500*/535/590/835, 12/20 gauge; Remington 870, 12/20 gauge; Winchester 1200/1300, 12/20 gauge and Maverick 88 *Synthetic forends on new Mossberg 500A, B, & C cannot be replaced because action bars are attached to the forend.
I shoot a lot of different shotguns! They range from sporting clays guns, mainly O/U guns to shotguns with 'scopes that I use for still target shooting.
I shoot a lot of different shotshells ranging from ultra-lite target loads to magnum turkey loads and some powerful waterfowl shells.
I spend a lot of time at my range evaluating all kinds of shooting, hunting and lately, home defense products. That's why this new "Five-Sided Aluminum Forend" (FSAF) from ATI caught my eye. While it appears to have been developed with law enforcement and the military in mind, it seemed to me to be a perfect addition to a pump gun for home defense.
The FSAF arrived beautifully package and included everything necessary to install it on a variety of shotguns and with a variety of rails and hardware. The instructions were very straight forward and made assembly very easy. It took only a few minutes to have the FSAF installed on my Remington 870 Express shotgun.
I immediately worked the forend several times and was impressed with how easy it was to get a grip on it. The grooves really allowed a firm hold. To test just how firm, I took my 870 to the range.
Summer in Southern Illinois means very hot temperatures and very high humidity. We've had 100+ days here for the last month and humidity levels or 70% - 80% are very common. In just a few minutes outside, you are wet with sweat.
I loaded my 870 with 3 rounds of home defense shotshells from Remington and fired them as quickly as possible. I was able to keep a firm grip on the forend and always felt in control of the shotgun, even with sweaty-wet hands. I like that.
I can just imagine that if I were confronted by some thug breaking into my home in the middle of the night, my hands might just be a little sweaty and being able to firmly grip the forend of my home defense gun would be very reassuring.
I also tested several of the rails on the forend in different configurations but have not yet installed any accessories on them. That may come later but even if I only use it for a better grip on my home defense shotgun, it's a great product.
I'd recommend it to any shooter or home owner who'd like to upgrade his "pump-gun".
As an aside, I also tried the FSAF on one of my still target shotguns. It gave me a great "hold" and really allowed me to stabilize the gun in my hands. The shoots that I attended also took place in 90+ degree temperatures in both South Carolina and North Carolina and I had no trouble getting a grip on my guns.
