There are many compact and sub-compact pistols made today in various calibers. There seems to be one for just about everyone with features that should appeal to any shooter. The concealed carry market has produced a demand for these guns that gun makers are having a hard time meeting.

Since the S&W Shield was introduced it's been very popular with civilians for legal concealed carry and also with law enforcement officers as a backup or off duty carry gun.

Recently, I had an opportunity to examine, carry and shoot the 9mm version of the Shield. It's one good gun. It fits the hand very well and has an excellent trigger that's smooth and very easy to control.

The slide is easy to retract for loading and during this evaluation, I asked 2 additional men and 2 women to join in my evaluation. Both men are former law enforcement officers and regular shooters. One woman was very familiar with hand guns and the other was not. The Shield was a real hit with all of them.

The Shield employs a take-down lever for disassembly and it's very easily done. It can be field stripped for cleaning and lubrication in a matter of seconds and reassembly is just as easy.

The real test of any gun, as we all know, is how well does it point and shoot. That required a few trips to the range with a variety of shells, those 4 shooters previously mentioned and me to see just how well this gun performed.

We fed it both full metal jacket rounds and some hollow points of various designs. We did not have one failure to feed or malfunction of any kind with this pistol. We found it to be controllable and very accurate, shooting without a rest at 7 yards. For anyone interested, I'll be pleased to expand upon the type of ammo tested through this gun.

The M&P Shield would make an excellent choice for anyone looking for a small concealable pistol.
