"Hevi-Shot is the industry leader in non-toxic shotshell ammunition and is the first choice of many sportsmen. With heavier than lead shot, Hevi-Shot ammunition offers more knockdown power at extreme ranges, superior pattern density and superior downrange energy.

Hevi-Shot Hevi-Duty ammunition is taking the hard hitting reputation of Hevi-Shot to make the best defense ammunition available for shotguns. These low recoil rounds have 30 non-toxic pellets that deliver more down range energy than standard buckshot. With defense in the home in mind, Hevi-Shot developed a frangible pellet that offers reduced risk of over penetration and ricochet."

Home defense loads are a hot topic today with most major companies having introduced one or more over the past couple of years. I've evaluated several of them and published my findings in “Product Test” articles on this site. I used the FBI protocol for much of my work but modified it somewhat, mainly in the distance my shots were fired and I used mycrocrystalline wax rather than ballistic gelatin due to the instability of ballistic gelatin in higher temperatures.

Given the feedback that I had from that article from readers all over the U.S. and Canada and the several thousands who read the article in the first 48 hours, home defense loads are a subject that many people want to know more about. It was also reported to me that several bloggers and others had picked up that article and made it available to their readers.

When I first heard of the work being done by Enviorn-Metal on their new HD loads, I was very interested mainly because of the type of shot they intended to utilize. They chose to use frangible shot which has many obvious advantages over other types, especially in urban environments.

Maybe a definition of the word frangible is in order. “A frangible bullet (or in this case shot) is one that is designed to disintegrate into tiny particles upon impact to minimize their penetration for reasons of range safety, to limit environmental impact, or to limit the danger behind the intended target.”

For example we all know that 00 buck will, with a torso hit, in all likelihood stop an intruder but my evaluation of that shot size also confirms that it will penetrate many common barriers and thus is a potential hazard to non-intended targets. Smaller shot sizes, even bird shot may reduce the over-penetration results that are more favorable but may not produce the energy necessary to stop a determined intruder, especially if he's drugged or wearing heavy clothing.

The idea that a suitable load of larger sized shot to aid in stopping an intruder without the danger of over-penetration intrigued me. Frangible shot would essentially turn to dust if it hit a hard object and not pose the danger of wounding or killing an untended target. I already knew from years of experience the quality of shells loaded by Enviorn-Metal, all that was left was actual field experience with this new load of Hevi-Duty HD shells.

I have a Remington 870 equipped with an ATI Talon Tactical Six Position Shotgun Stock and an 18.5” cylinder bore barrel. That makes a very handy gun for home defense since it's very adaptable in length of pull and includes a pistol grip. I also have the optional pistol grip only which can replace the adjustable stock in a matter of seconds for even more versatility.

Look for results of my evaluation of the Hevi-Duty HD shells in part 2 of this article...coming soon.
