Can You Believe?

Activities and Exhibits

Can you believe it’s almost the end of July already? This has, in many ways, been an exciting, if somewhat crazy year. We’ve had floods, storms and now we’re in the middle of one of the hottest times I can remember.

It’s also been a year full of exciting times for us as shooters and hunters. Even in this “economic downturn” manufacturers have introduced new products for us that will help us in the fields and woods this fall and next spring.

The SHOT Show kicks things off for all things shooting each January, followed closely for us as turkey hunters, by the NWTF Convention & Sport Show in February and the NRA Annual Meeting & Exhibits in April. It can almost be a sensory overload to attend each of these events but each has its own particular “flavor” and audience. The NWTF Convention and the NRA Annual Meeting are available for everyone to attend and I’d invite anyone with an interest in hunting and shooting to give them a try.

Doris was a featured personality at the NRA Annual Meeting and spent a couple of days in the ATI booth at that event in Pittsburgh. I was able to wander about and visit with old friends and see some of the new and exciting products that were introduced there. One of those really captured my interest and I’ll be reporting on that a little later this year.

For the past year both Doris and I have been using the great AKITA adjustable stocks from ATI on our Remington 870s and Mossberg 500s both in completion and for hunting. That has allowed us both to use the same gun at times and has proven to be a real advantage. You can read more about those stocks by visiting the “Product Test” article section.

I’ve also been working closely with a couple of manufacturers who are developing some new turkey chokes that should make their debut later this year or early in the spring of 2012. I’m not able to say much about them yet but I think you’ll be really pleased when you have an opportunity to give them a try.

Speaking of new products, Hyskore has come out with a bunch of new and very useful products in the past 12 months. Many are in the “why didn’t I think of that” category. They work and provide a real value. I’d recommend that you visit that site to see what’s new. I’ll also be publishing a “Product Test” article on a few in the coming weeks.

Lastly, Doris and I have been on the Still Target Shooting Circuit for the last 3 months and have visited 6 different states to compete. Doris has done especially well this year and I’ve picked up a few wins along the way as well.

This type of shooting allows us to put products to a real test, in the field and in pretty fierce shooting conditions at times. We find out what works and what doesn’t, what will hold up over time and what will fail.

Over the course of the season, we shoot hundreds and hundreds of full power 3” turkey loads in both 20 gauge and 12 gauge. That can take a toll on guns, scopes and of course on us, if we don’t properly prepare for it.

In just a few weeks, I will publish a review of the products we’ve used this year and how they’ve performed. I hope you’ll find it interesting and informative and that it will be helpful as you prepare for the upcoming fall and spring seasons.
