Brenneke 12 Gauge 2.75" K.O. 1 oz. Deer Slug with attached wad.
The literature claims a muzzle velocity of 1600 feet per second and a muzzle energy of almost 2500 foot pounds. At 50 yards it retains a velocity of almost 1200 feet per second and energy of about 1400 foot pounds.
Brenneke states that "...optimum sighting-in distance (is) 91 yards..." but I chose to perform my tests at 50 yards. That's a self-imposed limit for smooth bore guns used for deer hunting.
For these tests I used a Benelli SBE and a 26" smooth bore factory barrel with an improved cylinder choke tube.
I was able to shoot well placed groups at this range and shot several that were in the 2"-3" range. This is plenty good for deer sized targets. The holes in my targets were what you'd expect from a 1 oz. lead slug and the recovered slugs were "great big hunks of lead".
I've killed more deer with rifled slugs over the years than anything else and there's no doubt that these from Brenneke will do the job.
