"Handi-Racker is placed over the slide of a handgun. As the user presses the handgun grip forward, the body of the Handi-Racker retains the slide.
Once the slide has moved sufficiently rearward, easing pressure on the handgun grip allows the recoil spring to drive the slide forward and load/unload a cartridge into/from the chamber.
It may also be used to help with maintenance."
The first time I read about the Handi-Racker, I just didn't get it. I only saw that "...it could be used as a tool to rack a slide and load a pistol." I'd never had a problem doing that, so I I guess that I just didn't see the need for it.
From experience, I know that many of the smaller “carry guns” available today have strong springs and small slides. I had not however given much thought to the problem that could present to a person with limited hand strength.
Fortunately, I mentioned Handi-Racker to Doris, my wife. She reminded me about one of her friends who had a real problem with hand strength. She'd always wanted a small pistol but all of them that she'd tried had been too hard for her to rack the slide, so she'd given up on the idea.
Okay, sometimes I don't always get it and need to take a second look at a product.
I went to http://handi-racker.com/ and looked at the information there again. I made an inquiry and soon was in conversation with Chris McAnich, the owner. After our conversation, both models plus one of the new Range-Rackers were on the way.
When they arrived, Doris and I experimented a bit with both models, then she took one to her friend for a try. It worked well for her and now she's back in the market for a small pistol. Chalk one up for Doris.
While I don't currently have any difficulty in racking a slide to load or unload a pistol, the Handi-Racker has become a "go-to" tool for maintaining my pistols. I had really missed this part when I first read about the Handi-Racker.
I clean all my pistols on a regular basis. This is where the Handi-Racker really shines for me. These compact guns can be hard to hold and get in just the right position. I use one to hold the slide in the proper position for disassembly. This makes the whole procedure much easier and quicker.
The new "Range-Racker" with 5 slots to fit most pistols.
I have the Range-Racker on my work bench. It's very stable and allows me to work on all my pistols more easily. It's a very handy tool!
These are simple tools, that should last a lifetime and work consistently with a variety of pistols.
