HEVI-18 - TURKEY TSS

Hevi-18 NEW PRODUCTS FOR 2019 TSS From Hevi-Shot

"People who hunt with TSS are not looking for a normal bird harvest.  They seek the “wham!” of rolling the bird so hard that it takes a minute to understand what just happened.  We’ve seen it ourselves: amazing!  We just want to help them get that thrill by putting lots of shot in the payload."

Ralph Nauman, President & CEO of Environ-Metal, makers of Hevi-Shot products has been a friend for over 20 years. I recently asked him about their "about to be launched" TSS Turkey Loads, Hevi-18.

He answered all of the questions I asked and allowed me to share them with you my readers. You should know that this is a  bit unusual. Many, most manufacturers won't share any information until the product is launched.

CB: One thing that really stands  out is the very high payload, compared to other TSS shells. It seems that the recoil would quite "stout". I'd be interested in the rational behind that heavy load.

RN: People who hunt with TSS are not looking for a normal bird harvest.  They seek the “wham!” of rolling the bird so hard that it takes a minute to understand what just happened.  We’ve seen it ourselves: amazing!  We just want to help them get that thrill by putting lots of shot in the payload.

CB:  The hot shells have been the 20s and  the .410s.  Do you plan to have all loads available when you introduce them?

RN: We will have all the loads ready by late November or early December and present them to the market all at once.

CB: That little Stevens .410 has been very popular, very inexpensive and was, may still be, very hard to find. Are you looking to partner with a gun maker?

RN: At the moment, we aren’t looking to partner with a gun maker because we don’t understand whether the world has really decided $8-$10 shotshells are the key to happy turkey hunting.

CB:What specific attribute(s)  will you emphasize that makes your TSS better than the competition?

RN: 1) Payload; 2) Pattern (which results in part from the high payload).  You know that the TSS pellets don’t spread much, and if you put more of them in the shell, the patterns you produce are amazing; close to 60% of the pellets in the 10-inch circle.

We are buffering our TSS loads with our frictionless spherical buffer (spheres of 0.016-0.020” dia), and sealing with a new sealant that is more elastic and holds the buffer in the shell securely.

Historically, a difficulty with our buffer, smaller than a grain of salt, is that when folks load and unload their guns, and walk around with shells in their pockets, and fiddle with the crimp end (we all do this) while waiting to reload, our former seal would sometimes pop off and leak a bit of buffer from the center hole of the crimp.

Our new sealant is more rubbery and sticks to the hull better, so it won’t come off without serious abuse.  Thus it retains the buffer more securely.

CB: Lastly, what suggested price do you anticipate?

RN: Our pricing will be competitive (but no better) than that of others in the industry.  Mr. Trump has imposed a 30.6% tariff on TSS pellets, so prices in 2020 will be much higher than they have been in 2019.

CB: Thank you so much for sharing this information. I know it's not normal business practice to share this kind of information prior to a product launch. I appreciate it and I know my readers will as well.

RN: Happy to be of help, Clark.
