NWTF Crowns 2016 Still Target World Champions

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — The future of the National Wild Turkey Federation's World Still Target Championships is bright, as Joseph Sloan and Cody Waters, two competitors under the age of 19, captured titles in three of the six competitive divisions.

"Joseph and Cody both shot extremely well during the still target championships, an event that has become bigger than simply crowning champions," said Chris Piltz, NWTF special events coordinator. "It is about friends, family and fellowship, and each year that shows more and more."

In addition to naming 2016 champions, competitors set new world records for the 12-Gauge Hunter and 20-Gauge Hunter divisions.

Cody Waters, winner of the 12-Gauge Hunter division, also set a world record for the division shooting a score of 60 using a stock Browning BPS, JEBS Headhunter choke and Winchester Long Beard XR ammunition.

This was the second year for the 20-Gauge Hunter Class. The highest score last year was 21, which became the record.

Doris Bush broke that record with a 22 using a stock Remington 870 with a JEBS Headhunter Choke.*

Less than one hour later, Doris Bush broke her own world record in the 20-Gauge Hunter Class by shooting a 23. Later, that record was equaled by Ed Reed shooting a stock Browning BPS with an Indian Creek choke; and Michael Kirkland shooting a stock Remington 870 with a JEBS Headhunter choke. All competitors used Hevi-Shot Hevi-13 ammunition.

"While titles are given in six divisions, the entire turkey hunting community benefits from the results of the shoot," said George Thornton, NWTF CEO. "New and experienced hunters can take what was learned and are then more likely to have quick, clean kills in the field."

The Still Target Championships began as a way for hunters and the turkey hunting industry to showcase new technology and define best practices for patterning a shotgun and achieving ethical turkey hunting conditions. Competitors shoot turkey loads at targets 40 yards away to try to achieve the highest pellet count possible within a three inch circle.
